Grusswort des Oberbürgermeisters der Stadt Karlsruhe

On May 3rd, 1861 Wagner wrote:
"I have been in Karlsruhe for a couple  of days. With the nightmare Paris in my heart I was longing for the opportunity to settle there in an intimate atmosphere".

WELCOME

"A young man with a zither and a nice voice will always make a living", Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said. But for an International Competition of Wagner Voices this would certainly not be enough and that young man would return from Karlsruhe without having achieved anything. This October it will truly take a "Meistersinger" to convince the jury of the 6th International Competition of Wagner Voices with a flawless rendition of perhaps the "Flying Dutchman" or "Tannhaeuser". I am glad that this challenging competition and the final concert, organized by the Richard-Wagner-Verband Karlsruhe (Richard Wagner Society) will take place this year in Karlsruhe, the fan-shaped city. With the Opera and two music academies, the "Hochschule für Musik" and the "Konservatorium", Karlsruhe is well-equipped for this musical challenge and is a worthy place for the competition.

It is a great honour for the city of Karlsruhe that the great-granddaughter of Richard Wagner and the Director of the Bayreuth festival, Mrs Eva Wagner-Pasqier will preside over the jury. Richard Wagner himself once said about singing: "The oldest, purest and finest instrument of music, the instrument to which music owes its existence, is the human voice". I hope all these pure voices will ensure a fine competition and I welcome the jury, the participants and all the friends of Wagner’s music to our city.

Heinz Fenrich
Mayor of the city of Karlsruhe
